![]() ![]() Barbara was a collector, of rocks, leaves, and piles of Easter eggs. It took a few months of trial and error, but at last we adjusted to our twins and they began to adjust to the world. And it is not an exaggeration to say they cried all the time. George and I had little experience with babies, and suddenly we were heading home with two. Of course, with every wish comes the famous second phrase: Be careful what you wish for. ![]() ![]() Barbara arrived first, Jenna second, and from then on, George and I each had a baby to hold. Barbara and Jenna were named for each of our mothers. On November 25, 1981, our girls arrived, five weeks early, small and healthy, and feisty from the moment they were born. So when the doctor told George and me that we were having twins, my deepest wish was coming true. When I first learned I was going to be a mother, I pictured two babies in my mind. ![]()

There are also a few issues concerning the pack and Mercy’s relationship with Adam. Mercy knows that if he doesn’t come around quickly then it will be the end for Samuel so she wants to give him some time to sort things out. Samuel is in crisis and his wolf is in control. It seems that he might be in some kind of trouble and someone wants to get his hands on the book. Reading these novels, it is easy to forget that the true power lies with Cusk, who has chosen to submit her character to such a radical experiment in passivity, and to respond to the chatty, descriptive tradition of the naturalistic English novel with deliberately wrought formalism and silence. It is as if she has renounced all personal agency and narrative authority. Faye, neutral as a blank page, listens to each of them in turn, sometimes passing judgment, but more often leaving it to the reader to decide how to interpret what we have heard. Her interlocutors speak in long, arcing monologues that swoop from the minute banality of personal experience to touch on the great themes of human life and society and back again. “She lends herself as a filter,” as Judith Thurman wrote in a New Yorker Profile, last year. ![]() ![]() ![]() Like “ Transit” and “ Kudos,” the two books that followed it, “Outline” serves as a record not so much of Faye’s own thoughts and actions but of those described to her by the people she encounters. In 2014, the novelist Rachel Cusk published “ Outline,” the first novel in a trilogy whose style was markedly different from anything that she had previously written. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Beckett is superb at undercutting reader assumptions with a casual line of dialogue or acute psychological observation: the book reads like Conrad’s Heart of Darkness reimagined by JG Ballard.Īnother dystopia featuring a near-future England governed by manipulative rightwing politicians arrives in the shape of NJ Crosskey’s hard-hitting debut Poster Boy (Legend, £8.99).
